Julia Kemper - 'Elpenor' Alfrocheiro - Red 2016
Julia Kemper is a winery based in the Dao region of northern Portugal, located slightly further inland than other Portuguese vineyards. It uses biodynamic winemaking ethos, attempting to farm sustainably and retain balance between the land and the wine. The Dao vineyard is surrounded by expansive forrests, mountains and a grove of olive trees that were also owned previously by the Kemper family in previous generations.
The 'Elpenor' is a classic Portuguese grape blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen and Alfrocheiro, made in a fresh, fruity style due to the abundance of sunlight and water in this region (for a warm Mediterranean climate, rainfall is objectively high). It is concentrated and full bodied with brambly dark red fruit flavours and aromas, and soft spice notes on the finish.
