Greece

Amazingly, Greece has been producing wine for the last 5000 years, and some even claim longer than that. For years Greece produced wine intended mainly for their domestic market and it was only in the last couple of decades that focus shifted to exporting internationally and putting more emphasis on creating premium quality wine. Mostly native grape varieties are grown, ripened in twisted bush vines that form a protective nest of branches against strong winds - most notably, the famous island of Santorini which also lies on top of an inactive volcano. The climate is warm and dry, producing concentrated wines that have influenced characteristics from the salty sea air and the volcanic soils.
