Rum

Rum is fermented, distilled sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The clear distillate is then aged in oak casks, imparting some deep caramel colours and the delicious flavours of charred oak. As you would imagine, rum production is prevalent in sugar producing countries,  the Caribbean and Central America. At Seven Cellars, we also classify Cachaca as a type of rum – it is similar because it’s made with freshly pressed sugarcane juice. It is made in Brazil and is the key ingredient in a Caipirinha cocktail. Back to rum proper and you can see we have a good deal of choice; aged, unaged, fruit infused and spiced. We hope you really enjoy the discovery and also that you pretend to be a pirate at least once when you’re drinking it.

Rum and Food Pairings

Rum pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Light rums complement seafood and tropical fruits, while dark and spiced rums pair well with grilled meats, rich desserts, and even cigars. Aged rums, with their complex notes, are perfect for sipping alongside chocolate or caramel-based desserts.

The History of Rum

Rum’s history dates back to the 17th century in the Caribbean, where sugarcane plantations produced molasses used for distillation. It quickly became a popular spirit worldwide, deeply intertwined with maritime and colonial history. For more spirits with a storied past, explore our Brandy collection.

Rum in Cocktails

Rum is the backbone of many classic cocktails, including the Mojito, Daiquiri, and Mai Tai. Its versatility allows it to shine in tropical drinks, warm punches, and even innovative modern mixes. For complementary cocktail ingredients, check out our Spirits collection for inspiration.
