Australia is one of the worlds biggest exporters of wine. It can be found globally and is a significant percentage of the Australian national economy. However, “move over spicy shiraz and the large glasses of chardonnay in Bridget Jones diary!” there has been something of a revolution in Australian wine of late and that’s extremely good news for wine drinkers everywhere.
Australia is at the forefront of experimental grape planting and wine making in all regions. We are seeing whole bunch fermentation, early picking, lower alcohol and interest in cooler regions and sites. The interest in biodynamics, organics and natural winemaking has emerged at the same time as the planting of lesser known varieties like Albarinio, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Grenache and Malbec. It’s wonderfully exciting so if you haven’t tried Aussie wine for a while – it’s not what you might have thought it was.
