Mead

Mead is made from fermenting honey mixed with water. Fruits, spices, hops and grains are sometimes added, with the ABV being as high as 20% and as low as 3.5%.

The sugars from the honey are mostly fermented with the finished drink being still or naturally carbonated ranging from sweet to medium sweet or dry.

What is Mead?

Mead is an alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with additional ingredients like fruits, spices, or herbs. Known as “the drink of the gods,” mead has a rich history and has been enjoyed for centuries across various cultures. For those who enjoy unique flavours, mead offers a distinctive alternative to wine or beer. If you're interested in other unique beverages, explore our Fruit Liqueur collection for more options.

Different Styles of Mead

Mead comes in several styles, including traditional, fruit-infused (known as melomel), and spiced (known as metheglin). Traditional mead highlights the natural flavours of honey, while melomels and metheglins introduce exciting flavours like berries, cinnamon, and ginger. For a refreshing twist, some meads are carbonated, creating a light, bubbly experience. For more natural and artisanal options, check out our Natural Wine collection.

Food Pairings with Mead

Mead’s versatility makes it an excellent choice for food pairings. Sweeter meads pair beautifully with desserts, while drier varieties complement savoury dishes like roast meats and cheeses. Spiced meads can add a festive touch to holiday meals, and fruit-infused meads work well with lighter fare like salads and grilled fish.

The History of Mead

Mead has a long, storied history dating back thousands of years. It was enjoyed by ancient civilizations from Egypt to Europe and has even been referenced in Norse mythology. Mead is often regarded as a symbol of celebration and reverence, earning it a special place in cultural traditions. Mead in Modern Mixology

Mead has made a comeback in recent years, finding a place in modern cocktails and mixology. Its unique flavours add depth and complexity to drinks, making it an excellent choice for cocktails. Try it in a Mead Mule or as a substitute for vermouth in a Manhattan. For more cocktail inspiration, explore our Liqueur collection.
