Yamazaki distillery is located in Shimamato, Osaka and opened in 1923. Owned by Suntory, it was Japan's first commercial whisky distillery.
The Yamazaki 18 was first launched in 1992 and since then it has gone on to win countless awards and accolades. The cult of Yamazaki 18 shows no signs of diminishing - The whisky seems to just get better and better - hence the elevated prices achieved on the secondary markets and all the flipping that goes on at auction houses and whisky fan websites.
If you're in it for the love of the taste of whisky - and want to drink it - here is what you'll find: This single malt is wonderfully smooth. There is a lot going on. It's complex so the flavours keep changing and developing in the mouth. There is a delicious and delicate touch of smoke too. The balance shows exceptional whisky making skill. 80% of the whisky is aged in Sherry butts - whilst the rest is aged in American oak and Mizunara oak, which is a type of Japanese or Mongolian oak.
