Session IPA

A hoppy pale beer that should ideally mimic the hoppiness of an IPA yet houses an alcoholic strength of say around 4.5%. Due to its lower abv the beer will also be lighter in body than a higher strength IPA yet more suited to a ‘session’, hence the name. This beer style can be very similar to a hoppy American Pale Ale.  Example: Burning Sky ‘Arise’

What is a Session IPA?

A Session IPA is a style of IPA (India Pale Ale) brewed with the same hops and flavours as traditional IPAs but with a lower alcohol content, typically around 3-5%. This style allows you to enjoy the full hoppy experience without the higher ABV, making it perfect for social gatherings and longer drinking sessions. For those interested in more classic IPAs, check out our IPA collection.

Flavour Profile of Session IPA

Session IPAs are known for their bright, refreshing flavours, with hop-forward notes of citrus, pine, and tropical fruits. They offer the bold bitterness of a traditional IPA but with a lighter body and cleaner finish. This makes Session IPAs a great choice for those who enjoy hops without the heaviness of higher ABV beers. For a similar light and refreshing option, explore our Pale Ale collection.

Food Pairings with Session IPA

The refreshing bitterness of a Session IPA pairs well with a wide range of foods. It complements spicy dishes, grilled meats, and burgers, cutting through rich flavours with its crisp finish. It’s also an excellent match for fried foods and light, savoury snacks, making it a versatile choice for meals and gatherings. For more food-friendly options, check out our Table Beer collection.

The Popularity of Session IPAs

Session IPAs have gained popularity among craft beer enthusiasts due to their approachable ABV and full flavour profile. They allow for a prolonged drinking experience without overwhelming the palate, making them ideal for social events and relaxed evenings. Brewing Techniques for Session IPAs

Crafting a Session IPA involves careful balancing of hops and malt to maintain bold flavour without the higher alcohol content. Brewers often use dry hopping to enhance the aroma, creating a beer that’s both fragrant and refreshing. This brewing approach highlights the hops without overpowering the lighter body. Seasonal Appeal of Session IPAs

Session IPAs are particularly popular during the warmer months, thanks to their light, refreshing qualities. With a lower alcohol content and crisp taste, they’re an ideal choice for summer gatherings, BBQs, and outdoor events. For more seasonal favourites, explore our New Beers collection.
