Georgia

With a claim to being the creators of wine, this country has a long history with winemaking. The earliest archaeological evidence of winemaking is here in around 6000bc. In modern day Georgia, there are still old school, traditional techniques used such as a ‘qveri’ for fermenting (a clay pot) and mostly native grape varieties are used, such as Saperavi, a red grape that produces potent, powerful reds. They have also played a part in encouraged new experimentation with extended skin contact white wines (orange wines, which are called amber in Georgia) with many native white grapes lending their own distinct and characterful flavour to the mix.
