The Luxardo business began in 1821 by capitalising on the Luxardo family home-made maraschino cherry liqueurs and this is the product that started it all... It is still produced in exactly the same way; Perfectly ripe marasca cherries together with the leaves and even some branches of the trees are steeped in alcohol in larch wood casks for up to three years. When deemed to be ready, this is then distilled in traditional copper-pot stills. To create the final liqueur, a simple mixture of sugar and water is blended into the distillate. This reduces the alcohol to 32%.
The resulting liqueur is perfectly clear in colour and has a deep, marasca cherry aroma. The flavour is smooth with marmalady, cherry, dark chocolate and hazelnut flavours. Use in a variety of cocktails or with fruit salads or ice-cream.
Today Luxardo owns the largest cherry orchard in Europe - with approximately 22,000 trees! imagine how that looks in the spring when its in full bloom...
