Rum started to be produced in Demerara County, Guyana, as early as the 1640s after the land was reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean by Dutch engineers. The resulting land was high in minerals and perfect for growing sugar cane. By the mid 1700s there were upto 300 distilleries producing rum however, due to the decrease in sugar prices in the early 1900s, there were only 9 distillers left. In 1999 the merger of ae remaining estates and distillerys left only Demerara Distillers Ltd and they continue to produce rum today.
El Dorado rums follow the international standard for age statemnts meaning that the age stated on the bottle will be of the youngest rum in the blend so some of it may be much older.
El Dorado 15 YO is a blend of rum from 5 different stills including the Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still, this famously gives an earthy almost peat like flavour to the rum.
Think of the flavours you would expect from a Demerara rum, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, candied fruits and some vanilla from the oak. A wonderful sipping rum.
