The port house Real Companhia Velha can take the prize for being the oldest wine company in Portugal, having been making port for just over 260 years continuously. The business was founded in 1756 by the King of Portugal and it makes port for some of the worlds most recognisable old port houses, including Delaforce. It is situated on the banks of the Duero in Porto.
As the name suggests, white port is made with indegenous white grape varities. It can be made in a variety of styles from sweet through to dry. The flavours are generally fruitier and fuller bodied than other fortified white wines. Used as an aperitif before a meal, it is also gaining popularity as an alternative to gin and can be served on the rocks with tonic.
