Chateau Musar is world renowned for producing Bordeaux style red and white wines with their own unique twist. The wines are produced with minimum intervention and the vineyards where certified organic in 2006. The red wines are unfiltered and unfined thereby being suitable for vegans. Due to the nature of these wines, especially those over a decade old, the wine should be stored upright the night before service and then decanted a couple of hours before drinking.
The 2002 vintage followed 4 years of drought with an erratic summer and ripening season. The grapes were harvested 2 weeks late, by hand, in the early morning. A longer than normal fermentation led to the wine being racked 6 months after harvest and then aged in French oak barriques for 12 months. The wines were blended and bottled 2 years later and aged for another 4.
Due to the weather and fermentation process this is a big wine with acidity to balance the fullness. A complex nose of spicey red fruits, cedar, and plum. The palate is full of red and black fruits giving way to Christmas cake, spices and figs all followed up with silky tannins, balancing acidity and a generous finish.
