Germany

The wines of Germany have a mixed reputation internationally; perhaps this is due to the deleterious Liebfraumilch or Blue Nun effect. However for those in the know, the wines of Germany are utterly superb and certainly world class. Riesling is the aromatic and delicious grape variety best known there. It has potential for ageing and it can be made in a variety of styles from dry to sweet, if you’ve never tried Riesling now is surely the time. Get to know this wonderful grape variety – it might rock your world. Pinot Noir (known as Spatburgunder) in Germany also makes some of the most outstanding wines – earthy, rich and with a high acidity – also perfect for ageing. German Pinot Noir is often as good as it gets.
