Unit price per

Domaine Maupertuis sits in the commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier and La Roche Noir in Auvergne on slopes with volcanic and clay soils, growing local variety ‘Gamay d’Auvergne’ – the more rustic, peppery native version of Gamay. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are also grown in small amounts in the vineyards. Most of Jean Maupertuis’ wines are grown on old vines, ranging from 40-100 years of age. Taking a natural wine education from one of the leading ‘fathers’ of natural wine, Marcel Lapierre, Jean started adopting natural wine practices – planting on alternate rows from year to year and allowing wild flowers and grass to grow in the unoccupied rows, using no chemical interventions whilst growing, bottling with no fining or filtration, adding no sulphur at all to the wine and using natural fermentation methods.

Using semi-carbonic maceration, the free run juice from the press is used for the bulk of this wine, with malolactic conversion taking place. It has a fresh, mostly fruity palate, but with added complexity from savoury touches – Gamay D’Auvergne tends to have hints of more rustic flavours and aromas. Expect more depth with bramble, forest floor and mushroom notes.
